Two new clubs, Ardrossan Ensign and Ardrossan Seafield, were founded in 1878. Ardrossan Wanderers played a 'one-off' game.

ARDROSSAN CRICKET AND FOOTBALL CLUBS CONVERSAZIONE
A Conversazione, which was such a happy and successful affair that we are surprised an account of it has not sooner found its way into our local, took place in the Town Hall, Saltcoats lately. The turnout of members and their fair partners was large and taxed the hall accommodation to the utmost. Several gentlemen in the neighbourhood who take an interest in the clubs graced the meeting by their presence and were made to feel the pressing need there is of providing a commodious hall for Saltcoats. Lieutenant Guthrie was called in the chair and performed the duties thereof in his own peculiar and happy way. Amongst the friends present were Captains Barclay and Fullerton, Messrs Fullerton and Brown, Glasgow and Hogarth, Whitley. Tea was served up in a manner that reflected greatly on the good management and careful attention that is always taken in such matters by Mrs Leckie, purveyor, Ardrossan. Thereafter the chairman gave a short address on the benefits to be derived from outdoor sports and advised all young men who had a little leisure time to devote a part of it to outdoor recreation expressing his belief that there was no game he could recommend like either cricket or football. Addresses were also given by Mr William Guthrie vice-president of the club and Rev Mr Clark. Songs were sung by several members and a glee-party made up of members sang several pieces in a style that added much to the evening's enjoyment. The conversazione was a thoroughly enjoyable one and at the close several votes of thanks were accorded. An assembly followed, the music being supplied by Mr Muirhead's (Saltcoats) excellent quadrille band.

The football club involved in the conversazione was likely to have been Seafield as it was the most prominent in the town at the time.

ARDROSSAN SEAFIELD 2 - IRVINE WHITE STAR 0
A match was played between the above clubs on Saturday last (5 October 1878) on the ground of the former and resulted in their favour by two goals to none. The ball was almost altogether in the strangers' territory with the exception of a few chance runs made by them which were nobly repulsed by the backs of the home team. We understand that more attention was paid by the members of the home team to the dribbling and passing play which no doubt accounted for the victory. The leather was neatly passed through the posts both times by H Flinn. We understand that another match has been arranged between the home team and the Irvine Rovers to take play today Saturday (12 October 1878) on the ground of the home team - kick off at 3.45 pm. There was no match report in the following week's Herald.

ARDROSSAN - WANDERERS v ENSIGN
A match was played by these two clubs on Saturday last (23 November 1878) on the ground of the former. The play was very even throughout but at the close, the Ensign were the victors by three goals - and one disputed - to one.
Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald, 30 November 1878
The headline suggests that the game was played in Ardrossan on the ground of the Wanderers, implying that there was a team called Ardrossan Wanderers. There were no other Wanderers in the surrounding towns. No other references to Wanderers have been found but it appears that there may have been a club called Ardrossan Wanderers in 1878.

SALTCOATS THISTLE 1 - ARDROSSAN ENSIGN 1
A friendly match was played between these two clubs (probably on 30 November 1878) on the ground of the former and after an evenly contested game resulted in a draw - one goal each.
